Edinburgh International Culture Summit 2014

Culture – A Currency of Trust

2014 was a momentous year for Scotland and the UK that saw a series of exciting events take place including the Commonwealth Games, hosted in Glasgow, the second Homecoming Scotland, the Ryder Cup and the internationally famous Edinburgh Festivals taking place throughout the month of August.

Against this backdrop of inspiring sporting and cultural activity and following the overwhelming success of the inaugural Edinburgh International Culture Summit of 2012, the opportunity to develop further this unique platform was embraced by bringing together International Ministers of Culture with artists and thinkers to share ideas and solutions and to participate in debate and discussion based on the theme, “Culture – a Currency of Trust”.

The themes of the Summit gave focus to:

Values and measurements – what are the principles of valuing culture and how to measure that value.

Cultural Sustainability – models of funding and various mixes of funding; plurality and diversity of development; cities and regions as drivers of culture.

Cultures and Nation Building – culture and democracy with consideration of new nations.
