Special Performances

The Laboratory for Global Performance and Politics was founded in 2012 by Derek Goldman, an award-winning professional theatre artist, leader in the field of global performance, and Professor of Theatre & Performance Studies, and Ambassador Cynthia Schneider, Distinguished Professor in the Practice of Diplomacy and a former US Ambassador to the Netherlands. The Lab was established as a result of  of a convening on Global Performance, Civic Imagination, and Cultural Diplomacy. The Lab has emerged as a widely recognised, global leader, unique for its pioneering interdisciplinary approaches to integrating the performing arts with international relations.

A joint initiative between Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service and Georgetown College, the Lab has become a centre of learning, practice, policy, and of global theatre and performance that has had a transformative impact on students and practitioners of international affairs. Unique in fusing these traditionally separate fields the Lab’s work aims to humanise global politics through performance, and empowers artists to engage productively with international affairs and foreign policy.
