Hon Maggie Barry ONZM is New Zealand’s Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage, Minister of Conservation and Minister for Seniors. Prior to entering Parliament in 2011 as the Member for Auckland’s North Shore electorate, she was an award-winning current affairs television and radio broadcaster and co-producer and presenter of the long-running television programme Maggie’s Garden Show. In 1996 she was awarded the Order of New Zealand Merit for her services to broadcasting. She has worked with successive governments on a range of health related bodies including chairing a working party into palliative care. A former Patron of Hospice NZ and Alzheimers Wellington, she has also served as Director of Outward Bound and Chair of the New Zealand Book Council. In her first term as Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage,
she has been extensively engaged in New Zealand’s First World War commemorations programme and has focussed on sustainable funding for the arts and cultural facilities. In response to the Canterbury earthquakes, she recently introduced a new fund to support the private owners of earthquake-prone heritage buildings.
