Stephen Deuchar

Trustee
British Council

Sir Stephen Deuchar CBE is an arts professional with long experience in the museums sector in the UK and internationally. Most recently he was Director of Art Fund, the national charity for art. He led the organisation through a significant period of development and modernisation across a decade, delivering financial support to museums and curators through revenues from the National Art Pass and other fundraising. Other priorities were the launch of the free crowdfunding platform for museums, Art Happens, and the development of the Museum of the Year, whose judges he chaired form 2012-19. Prior to joining Art Fund, Stephen was the founding Director of Tate Britain (from 1998 to 2010), building its reputation in part through a programme of international travelling exhibitions, some delivered in partnership with the British Council. He previously spent 12 years as a curator, then exhibitions director, at Royal Museums Greenwich. Educated at the universities of Southampton, London, and Yale, he has a strong interest in both contemporary art and 18th-century British painting. He was made CBE in 2010 for services to the arts and knighted in 2021.
